The Many Titles of The Virgin Mary
This rather complete list of poetic, devotional titles for the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God was culled from the Bible and the Catholic Tradition (hymns, litanies, novenas, poems, writings of the saints and Early Church Fathers) by Meredith Gould, Ph.D., who found the completion of her Jewish heritage in the Catholic faith.
Am I the only one who wants to have in one handy location all the titles ascribed to Mary? I think not, and so I’ve compiled a fairly comprehensive but not exhaustive list of the ways Catholics refer to Mary. (Her Hebrew name appears in texts as either Maryam or Miriam, depending on the translation.)
This is quite the compendium, one that provides an almost daily name upon which to meditate. Indeed, you might consider doing just that to deepen your understanding of, appreciation for, and devotion to Mary. Which titles immediately capture your imagination? Which ones provide familiar comfort? Which ones seem quirky or downright weird? Personally speaking, I’m hard-pressed to choose between “Neck of the Mystical Body” and “Undug Well of Remission’s Waters,” although “Paradise Fenced Against the Serpent” is a strong contender.
Notice how your favorite aspect of Mary shifts according to your life circumstances and spiritual condition. Note also how alphabetizing this roster makes for some very interesting juxtapositions!
