Ratzinger Report-interview of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger(Pope Benedict XVI)by Vittorio Messori on post-Vatican II Catholic Church

The Ratzinger Report

The Ratzinger Report

By: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI)

Three years after being named Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger granted what no previous prefect had ever granted before--an invterview with a member of the Italian Press which lasted not a few minutes, but several days, taking place in August 1984 in the Tyrolean Alps.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (the future Pope Benedict XVI) was asked many questions by Vittorio Messori, about the state of the Church in the troubled post-Vatican II era.  Cardinal Ratzinger responded with extreme candor to Messori's many questions, including the most controversial.  The resulting book, published in 1985 as "The Ratzinger Report," is an open and forthright analysis by Cardinal Ratzinger of the roots of the crisis following the Second Vatican Council with the future Pope Benedict XVI's proposals on how to preserve the genuine fruits of Vatican II without accepting the distortions of that council that are so often promoted wrongly as being in accord with "the spirit of Vatican II."

The Ratzinger Report is a "must-have" book for anyone who wishes to understand the mind of the new Pope Benedict XVI and his vision for the future of the Church.

The topics covered in the Ratzinger Report are many:

  • the true Spirit and letter of Vatican II
  • the Church as God's, not ours
  • the nature of the priesthood
  • the papacy, the episcopacy, and the role of bishops' conferences
  • liberalism, relativism. and the permissiveness of modern society
  • the role of women
  • six reasons not to forget the Blessed Virgin Mary
  • spirituality for today
  • the dignity of the liturgy, the eucharist as the heart of faith, and the difference between solemnity and triumphalism
  • the devil, the angels, purgatory, and limbo
  • ecumenism and christian unity
  • liberation theology, Marxism and capitalism
  • evangelization and why Jesus is the only Savior

The 197 pages of the Ratzinger report are a fascinating read and provide the easiest introduction to the thought of Pope Benedict XVI for ordinary people!
