William of St.-Thierry was the Benedictine abbot of St.-Thierry near Reims, France, but was drawn to the reformed of monastic life promoted by his friend St. Bernard, Cistercian abbot of Clairvaux. In 1135 Willian resigned his abbacy and joined the Cistercians. His writings demonstrated an unusually wide knowledge of the Bible and the Fathers, Eastern as well as Western. Biography by Dr. Italy
