Ressourcement Theology Bibliography

Ressourcement Theology and its Intellectual Background
A Select Bibliography

Ressourcement Theology was a theological movement from the early 20th century through the Second Vatican Council that saw the key to the revitalization of both theology and pastoral life in the church as lying in a reappropriation of the sources–the liturgy, the Scriptures, the Early Church Fathers and the writings of others saints and doctors in whom the Catholic tradition comes to especially powerful expression, particularly St. Thomas Aquinas. Derivsively called the “new theology” or “La nouvelle théologie” by its opponents, this movement is connected with mostly French theologians such as Henri de Lubac, Jean Daniélou, Henri Bouillard, Yves Congar, Louis Bouyer, and Marie-Dominique Chenu, as well as with Swiss theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar. The movement drew upon the thought of philosophers and poets as well, notably Maurice Blondel, Pierre Rousselot, Etienne Gilson, and Charles Peguy. This selected bibliography is excerpted from the bibliography of Marcellino D’Ambrosio’s doctoral dissertation “Henri de Lubac and the Recovery of the Traditional Hermeneutic,” directed by Avery Cardinal Dulles and submitted to the Catholic University of America in 1991. To read the first chapter of this dissertation which explains the history and character of ressourcement theology, click here.

Inclusion in this bibliography does not constitute an endorsement by Dr. Marcellino D’Ambrosio or the Crossroads Initiative, but is rather intended as an aid to scholarly research.
